More on being "queer"
Bonnie, I did some digging for you about the word "queer", and this is what I found. In the context of Western identity politics and political correctness, the term “queer” acts as a label setting queer-identifying people apart from the language, discourse, ideologies and lifestyles that typify mainstream GLBT-identifying people. There seems to be a belief that those terms are too restrictive and represent mindsets with which many people who call themselves "queer" do not wish to be associated. I know from experience that certain groups within those communities can be very exclusive--only identifying a very narrow way of life as lining up with their norms or as being "appropriate" or even being "real". If you want to know what I mean, try identifying yourself as "bisexual" around certain groups and you will likely feel as much prejudice and discrimination as you would feel from the mainstream heterosexual culture. I am not quite sure how inclusive "queer" is. I will see what else I can find out.
